The Riendengan-Sempu complex, just north of the frequently active Soputan volcano, includes the Sempu dome that grew within the 3-km-wide Riendengan caldera. Kawah Masem maar was formed in the W part of the caldera and contains a crater lake. Sulfur has been extracted from fumarolic areas in the maar since 1938. No historical eruptions are known.
